Re-usable component patterns built with Radix UI and Tailwind CSS — copy, paste, and own the code in your Next.js or React app.

About shadcn/ui

shadcn/ui is a set of re-usable component patterns built on Radix UI primitives and styled with Tailwind CSS. The distribution model is the point: you copy the source into your Next.js or React project and own it. Accessibility behaviour — focus, keyboard handling, ARIA — comes from Radix underneath, which is the genuinely hard part.

It is in active use here and the base layer of nearly everything we build. New project, first commits, the components go in. The value is not the default styling, which we change immediately — it is inheriting correct accessible behaviour while keeping complete freedom over markup and classes, with no wrapper API in the way.

This is where people get it wrong. MUI, Chakra UI, Mantine and Ant Design are dependencies: you install them, you receive upstream updates and a theming system, and you are bounded by what their APIs expose. shadcn/ui is not that. The code lands in your repository, so there is no upgrade path and no maintainer to fix your bug — divergence is the feature and maintenance is the price. Pick shadcn/ui when the design is yours and you expect to diverge. Pick a dependency library when you want a versioned surface a large team can rely on and nobody wants to own component maintenance.
