About Codex
Codex is OpenAI's cloud-based software engineering agent. You describe a task in natural language and it works in a sandboxed environment to write the feature, fix the bug, run the tests, and open a pull request. It is built around delegation, not pair programming: the unit of work is a task you hand over and a diff you review, not a conversation in your editor.
It is in active use here. We give it well-specified, self-contained jobs — a migration, a refactor with clear boundaries, test coverage for a module — and review the result as a PR like any other. It works best where the task is legible from the repository itself. Exploratory work still needs a person in the loop.
Claude Code is the alternative for work that needs sustained back-and-forth in a terminal against a large codebase, and Cursor is the one for editor-native, line-level work where you want to stay in the file. GitHub Copilot's coding agent covers similar ground with tighter GitHub integration, and Devin positions itself around longer autonomous runs. There is no outright winner here: we run Codex, Claude Code and Cursor alongside each other and pick by the shape of the task. Codex is the right call for delegated, reviewable units of work. It is the wrong call when you need to steer the work as it happens.
