1Password
Team password manager
About 1Password
1Password stores credentials, secrets, and sensitive documents behind end-to-end encryption. Shared vaults let a team hold credentials without pasting them into chat, and its developer tooling injects secrets into local environments and CI without them landing in a .env file that ends up committed.
We list it as the credential layer a team should have before it thinks it needs one. The failure mode it prevents is mundane and extremely common: shared passwords in Slack messages, in documents, and in the heads of whoever set the account up.
Bitwarden is the open-source alternative, cheaper and self-hostable, with a less polished interface. Dashlane and Keeper compete on enterprise features and admin controls. Apple's and Google's built-in password managers are free and fine for individuals, and weak at team sharing, which is the whole point in a company. For secrets in application infrastructure specifically, HashiCorp Vault, Doppler, or Infisical are the right tools — a password manager and a secrets manager overlap but are not substitutes.
