Semrush is a broad search-marketing platform. Beyond the usual keyword research and rank tracking, it carries organic and paid competitor data, backlink analytics, site auditing, and position tracking — which means one tool answers both "what should we write" and "what is our competitor spending on".
We use Semrush as the studio's SEO instrument panel. It's where we pull search volume and keyword difficulty before committing to a piece of content, and where we check whether a domain has the authority to go after a term at all. Its API is the part we lean on hardest — it lets us pull the numbers into our own analysis rather than reading dashboards.
Against Ahrefs, the trade is coverage for link-index depth: Semrush sees more of the paid and cross-channel picture, Ahrefs sees backlinks more completely. Against Google Search Console, they answer different questions entirely — Search Console tells you the truth about your own site and nothing about anyone else's, so most teams end up running both.
