About OpenRouter
OpenRouter is a single API that routes to models from many providers. One key and one request format reach Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, Mistral and others, with automatic fallback when a provider is degraded and per-request visibility into cost.
This is infrastructure we rely on. The value is optionality: model quality and pricing move constantly, and being able to change which model serves a workload without touching integration code means those changes cost an afternoon instead of a sprint. It's also the fastest way to run an honest evaluation, since the same harness can hit every candidate model.
Going direct to a provider's API is cheaper and gives you first access to new features and the full parameter surface — the right call once you've committed to one model. LiteLLM is the self-hosted equivalent if you want the routing layer inside your own infrastructure rather than as a hop. Together and Fireworks are stronger picks if you're mostly running open-weight models and care about inference speed. Our rule: route through OpenRouter while you're still choosing, go direct once the choice is settled and the volume justifies it.
